“Why start with stories of the Cape? The answer is simple: this is where the dream of Kleinood Farm began. For many years the de Villiers family lived in the Cape Town suburb of Tamboerskloof, before finding and establishing Kleinood Farm. Hence the name of our beloved Tamboerskloof wines. It was only recently that we decided to release a new wine which, unlike Tamboerskloof wines, is not made with grapes grown on Kleinood Farm. In creating Kleinood de herder Rhône Blend, we set about exploring new horizons, and discovered not only exceptional grapes but also a world of wonderful stories beyond the borders of our small farm. But, any big adventure starts at home, which is why we chose tales from in-and-around the Cape to launch this project. As we continue to grow this archive, we’ll let the stories guide us, always in search of the greenest pastures…”

“The myths and legends of the Cape are stories we all grew up with. They exist in many imaginations as multiple versions, and have done so for many, many years. Maybe that is why I felt so intimidated when asked to illustrate them. I approached each illustration cautiously, building the prints layer by layer with watery paints and ink, hoping that a translucent quality would make sure that nothing about these tales come across as too concrete. It is the fluidity of myths that let them survive many translations and tellings, allowing their survival for many more generations to come.”
