Summer 2018

Too many things have been in the way of writing this newsletter. Right now, it feels as if it should still be March or, at worst, May, but definitely not December. We started so many projects and so many things happened and changed that a good many good things just stayed undone. But, first things first.

It is all true and we are delighted to introduce you to Reynie Oosthuizen. Reynie joined the Kleinood team in October and will move to the farm, with his wife and two little daughters during December.

Summer 2016

This was a long hard summer in so many ways, a summer of extremes and discontent riddled with unfortunate and tragic events. A summer fraught with
daily headlines of social, political and financial disasters – terrorism, desperate migrants with nowhere to go, poverty, student uprisings, public protests and
climate change. The devastating drought turned the parched land to dust with dying animals and raging fires tearing through fynbos, forests and farmland.
“ … so much sadness such dust. “

But now, turbulent and gruelling summer is slowly dwindling into autumn holding promise of better and more tranquil days. We can, yet again, enjoy the bountiful gifts of nature and harvest the fruit yielded by this, same, summer.

Spring 2015

Anticipating, like counting the sleeps to Christmas, the exuberant beauty of colours, the scents, the call of the Piet-my-Vrou, the blossoms on the fruit trees, the wisterias, the poppies, the sage woods, the irises… And then the roses. Waiting for the first buds on the vines, the flowers on the olive trees, the swallows to arrive, picking the first artichokes and starting all the activities that nature demands to ensure a good harvest and fruitful summer. This year was no different. We also present you with some special offerings from our Secret Garden right at the end of the newsletter.

Summer 2014

I have not written a newsletter in yonks. The reason for this, however, is not that there has been no news – on the contrary. I can assure you that I am only ever silent because I am too busy to talk. After all, one can always dream up something to talk about as long as you have the time.

The last year has been a whirlwind of activity on Kleinood. Ups and downs always being part of any year, I am happy to say that the past twelve months have been mostly ups. The 2013 harvest was tough as harvests usually are, but it was exceptionally long. The reason for this being the bumper crop olives that just did not stop coming down. Again that is nothing to complain about with the only downside that this year’s olive crop will again be small.

Summer 2012

So spring has sprung – just when we were all ready to grow webs between our toes. How quickly it all happens! All of a sudden there are daffodils, tulips, blossoms and buds of more beautiful things to come everywhere. With the pruned vines and olive trees and the roses still neat everything seems so fresh and clean and in control! The light is suddenly bright, the water clear and the sky blue. What beauty, and how delightful.

Winter 2012

The 2012 season started 2 weeks later than any other season we have experienced before. Budding was uneven, so from day one we knew we had to apply different procedures to past seasons. The growing conditions were ideal with light spring rains arriving when we needed them most. This allowed for a stressless period during the warmer months of November, December and January. Around the middle of February we experienced some extreme heat, which resulted in a bit of sunburn on some of the more exposed, bunches of fruit. This was fortunately not severe or excessive.

Summer 2011

This year has been a really rough ride for everybody everywhere. The world seems to have been turned upside down in so many ways – our lives were inundated with earthquakes, tsunamis, the economic turmoil that will just not pass, devastating droughts and famine, revolutions and irresponsible and unscrupulous politicians. There seems to be so much pain and anger in the world that it is sometimes hard to appreciate the beauty and tranquillity with which we are surrounded in this bountiful little valley.

Winter 2011

Where has this year gone? All of a sudden it is winter again, or spring, and one can hardly believe all the things that have happened and are behind us once again. We had some consistent but much needed rains through the whole of spring and well into early summer which really helped the vines through the early growing stages. As soon as fruit was set the rains stopped and the fruit was allowed to mature pretty much disease free.The summer was hot and dry, but bewitchingly beautiful once again. There are few things on earth as seductive and enchanting as summertime in the Boland.

Summer 2010

Kleinood’s tenth birthday has come and gone and with it our third Christmas living on the farm. Looking back, as one tends to do at this time of the year, we can only but count our blessings. We have learnt a great many things and made many mistakes. We now know that farm life can be relentlessly taxing and that the job is never quite done. However, living close to the earth from season to season, seeing things grow and harvesting crops that you have tended all year is immensely gratifying. Whichever way we look at it, this was a good year.

Autumn 2010

As I settle down to write this newsletter the first of what could only be winter rains is falling outside. If this is anything to go by, we have a long and solid soaking ahead of us. It was once again a glorious summer with all the usual festivities and long beautiful days only to be experienced in the Boland. It was however, as we all know, also a challenging summer in many respects. The vineyards and winegrowers were alas not spared. When our winemaker talks about the vineyards and harvest it is all too clear that the 2010 harvest has proved to be an unforgettable year for him and his team.

Spring 2010

Can it really be August? Even spring seems to be early with blossoms and buds and bees everywhere. The last eight months have been hectic with work and festivities competing for attention on all levels. One can hardly believe that everything happened in such a short time.
The world cup has come and gone. What a wonderful experience it has been to be part of such a successful and happy event. Somehow, South Africans manage to deliver the goodies and work wonders against all expectations every time the chips are down.
