Syrah

Tamboerskloof Syrah

2014

  • “The 2014 Tamboerskloof Syrah is blended with 2% Mourvèdre and 2% Viognier (the highest Syrah in recent years), Reflecting the growing seasons, there is more fruit intensity compared to the 2013, quite vivacious with redcurrant, strawberry pastilles and just a touch of blackcurrant. The palate has a ripe and generous bouquet, the 15% new oak lending a little smoothness to the texture, good body and presence with a pleasant chewiness on the finish. Maybe I just find a little more refinement on the 2013 Syrah at the moment, but I still appreciate the spiciness that flows through on the finish. This will be released summer 2017.” – Wine Advocate, eRobertParker.com – Neal Martin (91 points)
  • “5% Viognier adds a floral note to this plush, velvety Syrah with fleshy black and red berry fruit as well as hints of pepper, leather, black olive and spice. Well knit after 20 months in 500 litre French oak barrels but will benefit from ageing.”  –  (91 points) in Gilbert & Gaillard, the French experts on Wine, April 2017

Tamboerskloof Syrah

2013

  • “Ripe and lush, with a racy edge adding to the plum compote, raspberry puree and kirsch notes, imparting lift and focus through the anise-accented finish. Shows modest toast throughout. A nice display of fruit. Syrah. Drink now through 2021.” – JM (91 points) in Wine Spectator, April 2017
  • “Fuller fruit than the 2012 vintage, with a baked note and quite heady alcohol. Good, but the previous release is in a subtler and more refined style.” – RH (16.5/20 points) on JancisRobinson.com
  • “The 2013 Tamboerskloof Syrah is blended with 4% Mourvedre and 1% Viognier. Gunter Schultz told me that he picked both this and the 2014 a little earlier than usual, fermented mainly in open vats with 10-12 days of skin contact with malolactic in barrel (19-20 months in French oak, 17% new). It builds on the promise that I found during my previous visit: “cool” scents of mulberry and raspberry coulis, a touch of blackcurrant pastilles, hints of orange blossom developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, crisp acidity, beautifully balanced, a subtle Syrah at first but delivering all the flavor and body you expect from this grape variety. It retains that Cornas-like finish I picked up on last year. This superb Syrah comes highly recommended. When you factor in price, it’s a no-brainer.”  – Wine Advocate, eRobertParker.com – Neal Martin (92 points)
  • “Gunter Schultz’s Syrah is a cuvée with 4% Mourvèdre and 1% Viognier and is the best release yet from this impressive operation on the Upper Blaauwklippen Road. The oak is quite marked here, but it’s supported by clove and pepper spice notes, some tapenade and liquorice, a core of red fruits and a granitic bite.” (92/100 points), Tim Atkin – South Africa Report 2016
  • Silver Medal, International Wine & Spirit Competition 2016 (UK)

2012

  • Gold Medal at the Berlin Wine Trophy Awards, January 2017
  • “Super purity and elegance alongside potent black cherry fruit and a smart acidic line. Crisp, juicy, sophisticated, age worthy.” – RH (17+/20 points) on JancisRobinson.com
  • “The nose errs towards the red fruit spectrum whereas the 2011 is more black. There is wonderful purity here with red cherries, red plum and a dab of boot polish. The palate is medium-bodied with super-fine tannin. There is killer purity here, a gentle crescendo in the mouth towards a poised, saline finish. This is a benchmark Syrah for Kleinood – a quite brilliant wine.” – Wine Advocate, eRobertParker.com – Neal Martin (94 points)
  • “A Rhône style blend of Syrah with small amounts of Mourvèdre and Viognier, this is a mini Côte Rôtie, with lots of perfume and freshness. The tannins still need time to integrate, but this is sweet, spicy and appealing, with a warm, full-bodied finish.” – Tim Atkin (91 points)

2011

  • “Very fine and rich. Mouth-filling and mouth-watering. Spicy finish and just not drying on the finish. Lots of energy. Drier year than 2010 but it doesn’t taste it. Really quite mellow.” – Jancis Robinson (16,5 /20 points)
